The sweet aroma of these freshly baked gingerbread squares will transform your home into a holiday bake shop.
By: Jodie Shield, MEd, RDN
Decorating gingerbread men. Building gingerbread houses. Holiday baking with your kids creates fun-filled memories. But gingerbread projects can be tricky and time-consuming. So I developed a super-easy and healthy recipe for gingerbread squares. Easy because you bake it in the oven; healthy because you make it with applesauce. I discovered swapping applesauce for shortening or oil results in a light and moist gingerbread.
I recommed baking gingerbread squares when hosting a party or having a few friends over for holiday cheer. The inviting sweet gingerbread aroma will make your home smell like Santa’s bake shop. One whiff and your guests won’t want to leave. (Maybe that is not a good thing?) I usually serve the gingerbread squares with a big dollop of whipped cream or frozen vanilla yogurt. How do you like to eat your gingerbread?
